Finger Lakes WIRED
Regional Innovations
An initiative of the Department of Labor, WIRED (Workforce Innovations in Regional Economic Development) stresses the critical role talent development plays in creating effective regional economic development strategies. WIRED goes beyond traditional strategies for worker preparation by bringing together state, local and federal entities; academic institutions (including K-12, community colleges and universities); investment groups; foundations; and business and industry to address the challenges associated with building a globally competitive and prepared workforce.
The Finger Lakes WIRED initiative has received funding to expand the original four county FAME initiative to the nine county region including Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming and Monroe Counties. The primary target area will address Image, Hiring and Training and Pipeline. The intent of this project is to create a regional cluster that will address the industry needs and identify workforce solutions. Recruitment and outreach of new businesses is currently underway.
An important component of this project includes the Work Keys Career Readiness Credential. The CRC is a tool that guarantees that a potential employee has a degree of trainability and possesses basic workplace skills in reading for information, applied mathematics, and locating information—skills that all jobs require. By certifying employees with recognized credentials, we are ensuring meeting business demands and creating success for employees. It can also assist in providing support to employers by determining necessary internal staff development and training needed to retain skilled workers and increase productivity.
